I debated long and hard on how exactly to do this. I debated doing just a first team, then I debated doing a first team/second team/third team type deal. What I decided to do was just list all the wrestlers that were nominated who fit the criteria of being at least a state qualifier and have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA. Next year I will be doing this a little different but details on that will come later.

First off, the Top Junior & Top Sophomore Lists have also been posted here on the front page. Now, I'm also looking to put together an All-Academic Team. To qualify a wrestler should be at least a state qualifier and have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Nominate wrestlers by emailing me by clicking this This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. And here's the final Top Seniors List for this season. I'm sure there may be some debate about this list, but please note it's based solely on Folkstyle accomplishments.

1. Tony DeAngelo (Sr, Southern Alamance, SQ-4-1-1)
2. Chris Caton (Sr, Northside Christian, 1-1-1-1)
3. Garrison White (Sr, Robinson, 2-1-1-1)
4. Cameron King (Sr, Trinity, 3-1-1)
5. Joey Moon (Sr, Southern Alamance, 4-1-1)
6. Phazon Roddy (Sr, Parkland, 6-SQ-1)
7. Jesse Doyle (Sr, Wheatmore, SQ-3-1-1)
8. Dustin Roemer (Sr, Pinecrest, SQ-6-1-1)
9. JJ LaPlante (Sr, West Wilkes, 2-1-1-1)
10. John Grigg (Sr, East Gaston, 4-SQ-3-1)

DeAngelo placing the highest of any senior at the Super 32 bolts him to the top. Add that to Sophomore National Champion, Junior National Runner-Up, and finishing 6th at 2012 FloNationals.

Caton was in contention for #1 but a less than stellar performance at the Super 32 gave DeAngelo the nod, however Caton did place 3rd at Prep Nationals this year, 5th last year as a Junior, came up one match short of placing as a Sophomore, and was 7th as a Freshman. Did not compete at FloNationals or Senior Nationals.

White comes in 3rd with a solid in state resume as well as doing well at some national level events to include taking 3rd at FloNationals.

King has beaten Doyle head to head in scholastic as well as placing 7th at Senior Nationals, 7th at Junior Nationals, and 8th at Freshman Nationals.

Moon may be the most underrated wrestler on this list. A two time state champion that everyone overlooks because he's on the same team with DeAngelo, Moon finished 4th at FloNationals this year, and 4th in Junior Nationals last year.

Roddy surges into the list on the strength of winning Senior Nationals. He was the highest finisher for North Carolina and only the fifth North Carolina wrestler to ever win the event.

Doyle, if this were based on Olympic styles he'd be the clearcut #1. No one in North Carolina can match his resume in those, however in scholastic styles I feel the others are ahead of him. He placed 2nd in Freshman Nationals, 3rd at Junior Nationals but came up two wins short of placing in Senior Nationals this year.

Roemer is clearly one of the best mat technicians in North Carolina, and an argument could be made for him to be higher on this list. What held him back in my opinion was not having the success at the National tournaments to cap off his high school career that the others did this past weekend.

LaPlante has a solid resume small school wrestler or not, the kid can hang with anyone in North Carolina.

Grigg makes the list because of his in state resume. He occasionally loses some matches he probably shouldn't, but come February everyone knows if you want to win the state title you have to get past him, and he finally got his state title this year to cement his place on this list. Did not compete in FloNationals or Senior Nationals.

I'm sure there will be some disputing a few of my decisions in the order, but here it is...

1. Drew Turner (So, Parkland, 1-1)
2. Rhett Hoy (So, Hendersonville, 1)
3. Trent Allen (So, South Brunswick, SQ-DNQ)
4. Jacob Grigg (So, East Gaston, 3-SQ)
5. James Passemore (So, North Gaston, 1)
6. Payton Shuford (So, West Iredell, SQ-2)
7. Franklin Wepner (So, Newton Conover, 1)
8. Dallas Roemer (So, Pinecrest, 5-2)
9. Troy Gregor (So, Hickory Ridge, SQ-3)
10. Parker Ragsdale (So, Holly Springs, 3)

Turner takes the top spot due as much to the numbers behind his resume as his resume itself. Two-time state champion, Junior Nationals 5th place, Middle School Nationals Runner-Up, Disney Duals All-American as a 7th grader, all sounds nice, but take a look at Turner's numbers in February the past two years: 10-0 in State Duals (only 2 of which he didn't earn bonus points for his team), 7-0 in regionals (all 7 by pin), 8-0 at States.

Hoy checks in at two despite finishing below Allen this year at Sophomore Nationals in the same weight. Here's why...Hoy was leading the eventual champion with 11 seconds left when he had to injury default out of the match. Hoy also placed at Freshman Nationals last year.

Allen checks in at third on the strength of being a Freshman National Champion and a Sophomore National Runner-Up. I look forward to seeing if he can match that success in state next year and win a state title.

Grigg checks in at four despite not placing at states this year. He, much like his brother, is someone that you know come February, if you want to win a state title that you have to go through. Placements aside, I just couldn't justify putting anyone else above him when I think he's pound for pound one of the better wrestlers in the state.

Passemore checks in at fifth on the strength of his state title this year, as a sophomore, at heavyweight. Read that last sentence again and you'll understand why I think so highly of his potential.

Shuford gets the nod over Roemer due to placing at Sophomore Nationals in the same weight where Roemer did not place.

Wepner really wrestled well at states and came up one match short of placing at Sophomore Nationals.

Roemer will be interesting to watch. He's already ahead of his brothers pace for state placements (yes, I went there). I honestly had a hard time not putting him higher on this list, he also came up one match short of placing at Sophomore Nationals.

Gregor was the only non-Senior in the quarterfinals of his weight class at states.

Ragsdale was an ironman, losing in the first round to Turner and then coming all the way back through consolations to take 3rd.

1. Parker Von Egidy (Jr, Piedmont, 6-1-1)
2. Nick Kee (Jr, Scotland Co., 3-1-1)
3. Kacee Hutchinson (Jr, Enka, SQ-4-1)
4. Rodney Shepard (Jr, Northern Durham, 5-2)
5. Cody Karns (Jr, Lake Norman, 4-3-2)
6. Jeremy Ward (Jr, Parkland, 2)
7. Jake DeAngelo (Jr, Southern Alamance, 3-3-3)
8. Michael Macchiavello (Jr, Sun Valley, 3)
9. Tyler Myers (Jr, Trinity, 6-1-2)
10. Colby Langford (Jr, North Henderson, 1-1)

Von Egidy's resume speaks for itself (7th at FloNationals, 6th at the Super 32, 2nd in Fargo Cadet Freestyle, Brockport NE Regional 1st Cadet & 2nd Juniors, undefeated at Waterway Duals.) and his head to head victory over Kee at Southside Showdown I earlier this spring locked up his position at #1.

Kee is another whose resume speaks for itself. Super 32 Runner-Up, Junior Nationals Runner-Up, Sophomore Nationals Champion, Freshman Nationals Third place finisher, two time state-champion...do I need to go on?

Hutchinson who is a Junior All-American, placed 7th at Freshmen Nationals, is a two-time state placer, three-time state qualifier, and one-time state champion checks in at three.

Shepard, at one point in the year, I actually had third on this list (yes, I've been keeping this list all year but just haven't posted it until now) but I personally didn't think he looked all that good in his state finals loss. Though since, that was a loss to Dustin Roemer he doesn't slide too far down.

Karns has steadily improved each year as has his state placement, and went into States as the favorite in many peoples eyes. Had he won he'd likely have been 3rd but Hutchinson's AA status at Junior Nationals & State Title gave him the nod.

Ward, honestly, I didn't even have him in the top 10 until he beat Mahaffey (who had beaten Tyler Myers) at Regionals. Once he beat DeAngelo in the state semis, it locked him up in the top 10.

DeAngelo has been a consistent performer his three years of high school so far. The only thing stopping him from being even higher on this list is the state championship that has so far alluded him.

Macchiavello checks in at eighth in large part due to his placement at FloNationals this past weekend. Combine that with finishing 3rd at states this year and his only losses at his natural weight of 182 all season in North Carolina were to Parker Von Egidy, Cody Tysinger, and David Crouch by a combined 4 points.

Myers checks in at ninth on the strength of his back to back state finals appearances.

Langford comes in at tenth after a disappointing Junior Nationals showing. Still, he's a two-time state champions that cannot be overlooked.

A few things to address first. One, for the Academic Excellence Award I tend to view that as a career achievement thing. This isn't a knock on any of the juniors that were recommended, I talked with several coaches before making my decision final and they all agreed. Two, while I appreciate the fact that several people nominated me for Person of the Year, I do not consider myself eligible for it.

Also, shortly after NHSCA Nationals & FloNationals I will be posting a top Junior list, hopefully with a top Sophomore list. I do not anticipate doing a top Freshmen list simply because there are many talented Freshmen that haven't gotten a chance to show very much on Varsity because of being behind upperclassmen on their team.
